Hi everyone and welcome to my website “Welcome to the Man Cave”. First allow me to address the 800 lbs. gorilla in the room and assure you that this is not a male chauvinist website. I have the utmost respect for women (my mom and my wife are women) and will encourage their inclusion, usage and participation on my site. There will be plenty of information that will benefit both men and women alike here.
I built this website because so often, as men we tend to not open up and talk to each other about our problems, our conditions and /or what concerns us about our physicality and the things that are impacting our health. We’re embarrassed to discuss our sicknesses or diseases because we feel it makes us appear weaker to our colleagues and /or less needed. We’ll put off a doctor visit when our kids need braces because we’re worried about affording both, because we didn’t have the best insurance or we haven’t moved up the corporate ladder yet.
I wanted to build a space where men can come to and feel safe asking questions. A place where they can get solid information, where together we can get healthier, stronger and more vital.
A little about me
Growing up gravity always loved me and it showed up frequently on the scale. I was always the heavy kid. I was “Husky”, at least that’s what they told my mother at the clothing stores. I couldn’t help it, I grew up in a typical large Italian family, plenty of aunts and uncles, cousins all over the place and at the center of it all “Granny” and “Grandpa”.
Granny was a high quality, high production, Italian food making machine. I’m not even sure if she ever slept. She never let us down, you could go to their house at any time of the day or night, any day of the week and she had some amazing food ready for you. And forget about the holidays, that’s when she kicked it up a notch and went into a whole other gear. Sunday gravy and meatballs… oh don’t get me started.
I didn’t have a chance…
But then I discovered girls. And that’s when things got interesting. I cleaned up my act, stopped eating like a cafone (Italian word that found it’s way into the English language; pronounced: ga-voon; meaning ill-mannered – we used it interchangeably with ‘pig’), started becoming more active and working out.
Things change though as we continue to get older. Our bodies become resistant to certain changes we try to make, certain chemicals in our bodies slow down in production causing our once vibrant bodies to begin to droop. Body parts fall off (lol, just kidding, I’m checking to see if you’re still reading my page)
Anyway, I am on a quest for better health, a stronger body and increased vitality and I’d like to welcome you aboard. There are a lot of myths out there and a lot of misleading information is being spread across the internet. We’re going to try to navigate through all of that to see what’s really true and I want to share it with you. That is my passion.
Why should I care so much about Men’s Health?
Because I’ve been on the front line. I’ve been where a lot of you guys are and have been. I’ve consciously made decisions that impacted my health because I couldn’t afford the high cost of health care. I’ve been laid off of jobs and had no medical insurance because to continue coverage while out of work it costs thousands of “real” dollars… that suddenly we don’t have anymore. But the kids still need well visits.
I’ve also been blessed greatly in my life, with circumstances that could only be explained as miracles of God. I remember back in 1991, I had just been laid off as a manager of a lumber yard in Long Island, NY. I had moved my family back in with my gracious parents. I had developed a pain in my mouth that over the next couple months became unbearable. Just as I was at my wits end with the pain and having no dental insurance and no money, I spotted an ad in my local newspaper. The ad was from a local dentist offering free dental work on one day only. I ended up going and getting a free root canal, including laughing gas because I AM a dental coward.
Another time I developed a severe case of bronchitis. My doctor warned that after he gets the chest x-rays back and if it’s turned to pneumonia I will have to be admitted to the hospital. I told him I had no money and no way of paying for anything. He assured me that in this scenario everyone would be paid for services by the fed through programs, the only one who wouldn’t get paid would be him and he told me he didn’t care about my money, he cared about my condition.
Fortunately it didn’t progress into pneumonia, but he sent me home with all the meds I would need to treat the bronchitis free of charge. He also never charged me for a single office visit while I was out of work. I see and talk to other guys, good men but less fortunate than I have been, that are in similar situations and the hardships and stress that they go through and my heart goes out to them.
We’re Looking For a Few Good Men
The reason I’ve built this site is that I have a close intimate knowledge of the issues facing men these days and as we mature (that’s a nice way of saying Get Older) things change. Our once strong and flexible bodies begin to show the signs of deterioration.
We can’t stop it and it’s better than the alternative. But we don’t have to take it lying down. We can now make choices that will impact our bodies in a positive way. We can get healthier, we can consciously eat better foods and we can make choices that will engage our bodies in more physical ways. We can get stronger and make decisions that will make us more essential to the world around us. We can become more vital and desirable.
I’m on a quest for better health, a stronger body and increased vitality and I’d like to welcome you aboard.
If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them below and I will be more than happy to help you out.
All the best,
Kevin
